Helping children sleep safely and soundly
At St Peter's, we understand that good sleep is essential for young children’s growth, learning, and wellbeing. We follow safe sleep practices in our setting and encourage families to do the same at home.
This guidance is designed to help parents create a calm, safe, and healthy sleep environment for their child.
Safe sleep practices reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in babies and help all young children develop healthy sleep habits.
Even for preschoolers, a consistent, calm, and safe bedtime routine helps children feel secure and rested.
As children grow, their sleep needs and routines change. Safe sleep continues to mean creating a calm, comfortable, and secure space.
Top tips for safe and restful sleep:
Keep your child’s sleeping area clear of cords, strings, and small toys.
Make sure the bed or cot is sturdy and age-appropriate (no drop sides or loose fittings).
Avoid heavy bedding or large pillows — a light blanket or child's sleeping bag is enough.
Keep the room at a comfortable temperature (ideally 16–20°C).
Always lay your child on their back until they are able to roll over independently.
Use cot-to-bed guards if needed, to prevent falls when transitioning.
Avoid letting children sleep in car seats, bouncers, or prams for long periods.
In our setting, we:
Provide a quiet, supervised sleep area for children who need rest.
Follow safe sleep guidelines and check sleeping children regularly.
Use clean bedding and ensure each child has their own designated sleep space.
Record sleep times and observations, so parents know how their child has rested.
Your child’s comfort and safety are always our top priorities.
A predictable bedtime routine helps children wind down and feel secure.
Try this simple approach:
Quiet play and a light snack if needed
Bath or wash time
Story or calm cuddle time
Soft lights, gentle voices, and consistent goodnights
Consistency helps children understand that bedtime is coming and signals the body to rest.
No smoking around your child or in their sleep environment.
Avoid co-sleeping on sofas or armchairs — it is unsafe for babies and young children.
Keep small objects and cords (like blind cords or monitor wires) out of reach.
Check sleepwear labels for “low flammability” safety marks.
Ensure pets are kept out of the sleep area.
If your child has particular sleep needs or struggles with rest, please speak to their key person. Together, we can support good sleep habits and keep your child safe and well-rested both at school and home.
