    Potty Training Information for Parents

At St Peter's, we understand that potty training is an important milestone in your child’s development. Every child learns at their own pace, and we’re here to support both you and your child through this stage with patience and encouragement.

🧸 When Is My Child Ready?

Most children begin showing signs of readiness for potty training between 18 months and 3 years. Every child is different, but signs of readiness may include:

    • Staying dry for longer periods (2 hours or more)

    • Showing awareness of needing to go (hiding, stopping play, or saying they need to wee/poo)

    • Interest in the toilet or potty

    • Being able to pull pants up and down with a little help

    • Wanting to be more independent

If your child isn’t quite ready, that’s completely fine — we’ll continue to support them until they are.

🚽 How We Support Potty Training at School

Our staff are experienced in helping children gain confidence with toileting. We will:

    • Work closely with you to follow your child’s home routine for consistency.

    • Encourage regular toilet or potty visits throughout the day

    • Use positive praise and encouragement — never pressure or punishment

    • Maintain your child’s privacy and dignity at all times

    • Handle any accidents calmly and discreetly (spare clothes are always helpful!)

We believe a relaxed approach makes potty training a positive experience for everyone.

🏡 How You Can Help at Home

    • Try to keep your child’s routine consistent between home and school.

    • Dress your child in easy-to-remove clothing (no tricky buttons or belts).

    • Talk about the potty or toilet in a calm, encouraging way.

    • Celebrate small successes — every step is progress!

    • Send in extra underwear and clothes in case of accidents.

Remember, setbacks are completely normal. Patience, reassurance, and teamwork make a big difference.

    💬 Communication Is Key

We value open communication with families. Please let your child’s key person know:

    • Where your child is in their potty training journey

    • Any specific routines, words, or signals they use

    • If there are any changes at home

Together, we can make this transition smooth and positive for your child.
