PE and Sport Premium

PE, Sport and Physical Activity Statement — 2026 Onwards

Our vision

At St Peter’s Primary School, our approach to PE, sport and physical activity reflects our vision: ‘One Family, Aiming High, Learning Together with God.’

We encourage children to recognise and care for God’s gifts: themselves, one another and our planet. Through PE, sport, active play and outdoor learning, including Forest School, we help children develop healthy habits, confidence and a love of being active.

We want every child to flourish physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. Our provision promotes inclusion, teamwork, perseverance and respect, enabling children of all abilities to experience success.

What is PE and Sport Premium funding?

PE and Sport Premium is additional, ring-fenced government funding that supports improvements in primary school PE, sport and physical activity. It must be used to develop provision and create sustainable benefits for current and future pupils.

The funding supplements the school’s existing provision. Core PE curriculum teaching must be funded through the school’s main budget.

Changes to funding from 2026

School sport funding is moving towards a new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, which the government has announced will replace the existing PE and Sport Premium model and be fully operational from spring 2027. The network is intended to provide both universal and targeted support to primary and secondary schools.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, eligible primary schools receive transitional PE and Sport Premium funding. The published funding formula is:

Number of eligible pupils Funding for 2026–2027
17 or more pupils £6,240 plus £10 per eligible pupil
16 or fewer pupils £390 per eligible pupil

For established schools, the calculation uses pupils in Years 1–6 recorded in the January 2026 school census. Funding is paid in one instalment, rather than the previous two-payment arrangement.

Our confirmed school allocation and spending breakdown will be included in our annual report. Future arrangements will be updated as national guidance develops.

Our priorities

Our approach follows the five national areas for improvement:

  1. Increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport.

  2. Increasing all pupils’ engagement in regular physical activity.

  3. Raising the profile of PE and sport across the school.

  4. Offering a broader and more equal experience of sports and physical activities.

  5. Increasing participation in competitive sport.

At St Peter’s, we will use these priorities to guide provision that meets our pupils’ needs, with particular attention to children who face barriers to participation.

Developing staff expertise

We will prioritise relevant professional development so that staff can provide confident, inclusive and progressive teaching. Training, shared practice and support from sporting partners will help strengthen expertise across the school.

Spending will follow the current funding rules. The premium cannot fund core staff salaries, replacement curriculum teaching or coaches covering teachers’ planning, preparation and assessment time.

Our Daily Active Mile

Our Daily Active Mile gives children an opportunity to move during the school day by walking briskly, jogging or running around the playground.

We encourage children to participate at a pace appropriate to their needs and abilities. The emphasis is on enjoyment, regular movement and personal progress.

Alongside the Active Mile, we will continue to promote active playtimes and lunchtime opportunities that help children build positive habits.

Inclusive opportunities and competition

We aim to offer a variety of activities so that every child can discover something they enjoy. We will encourage participation among less active pupils and support equal access for girls and boys, disadvantaged pupils and children with special educational needs or disabilities.

Our work with the Three Rivers & Watford School Sports Partnership supports collaboration, staff development and access to sporting opportunities.

We will plan school and inter-school activities according to pupils’ needs and the opportunities available each year. House competitions, festivals and sporting events will encourage teamwork, fair play and personal achievement, alongside opportunities for pupils ready for further challenge.

Swimming and water safety

We recognise swimming and water safety as essential life skills. Core curriculum swimming is funded from the school’s main budget. Where appropriate, the premium may support additional top-up swimming after pupils have completed their core lessons.

Our annual report will include Year 6 outcomes for swimming at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes effectively and performing safe self-rescue.

Sustainable improvement

We aim to create lasting improvements through staff training, shared expertise, appropriate resources and clear progression in pupils’ learning.

All expenditure will be checked against the current conditions of grant. The premium cannot fund capital projects, such as new fixed playground equipment, active mile tracks or Forest School environments.

The 2026–2027 allocation must be spent by 31 July 2027 and cannot be carried forward or used to prepay provision for a later academic year.

Monitoring and accountability

School leaders and governors will review expenditure, value for money, participation and the impact on pupils. We will use pupil feedback, staff evaluations and participation information to identify successes and areas for development.

For 2026–2027, we will publish our spending and impact report by 31 July 2027 and complete the Department for Education’s digital expenditure return by 5pm on the same date.

The report will explain our allocation, expenditure, outcomes, sustainability and Year 6 swimming and water safety attainment.

Further information is available in the Department for Education’s PE and Sport Premium guidance.
