Our Vision:

To develop linguists with a respect and interest in cultures and language.

Linguists at St Peter’s recognise the importance of empathy and respect for other cultures and people and demonstrate this through a developing understanding of the relationships between language and identity, cultures and the world around them. They hold a genuine and positive curiosity for language learning. Linguists at St Peter’s are working towards becoming life-long language learners. We follow the Language Angels programme for our modern Foreign language.

Our MFL Aims:

  • Broaden our children’s understanding of the world and deepen their empathy and respect for other cultures and people.
  • Develop their confidence and ability to use a foreign spoken language.
  • Develop their resilience when learning to read and write in an unfamiliar, foreign language.

The Curriculum will:

  • Recognise those pupils who can speak another language and use them as experts to support learning.
  • Use songs, games and storytelling as a way of enhancing learning.
  • Allow for early learning units take place in Year 1 and 2 to support the children’s transition into Year 3 and KS2.
  • In the Foundation Stage, children will explore early Spanish phonics and sounds via song, rhyme and repeated phrases.
  • Allows children to ask questions and discover things about different cultures, languages and identities developing their ability to reflect on the relationships between themselves and their language, culture and identity as well as promoting their awareness of themselves and other cultures.
  • Prepare for their transition to secondary school by developing confidence in performing and speaking in a foreign language.
